It’s Spring! If the snow and cold ever go away, I’ll believe it. Ha! Happy fourth quarter of school, happy spring, happy reading! School is super busy until spring break now, but I’m still on track with my reading.

Physical Books: I received a lovely book mail package today with the new book, The Carpet: An Afghan Family Story by Dezh Azaad and Nan Cao, published by Abrams Books for Young Readers. It’s the story of a family who lives on their carpet, and wherever they happen to be, the carpet brings them “home.” I love hearing about family traditions and cultures, and The Carpet is perfect for sharing.

I’m still reading Rosewood: A Midsummer Meet Cute by Sayantani DasGupta. It’s perfect for catching that spring/summer vibe.

Libro.fm: I’m still listening to Finally Seen by Kelly Yang and I LOVE the characters! The narrator (Cindy Kay) is good and I’m enjoying my commute to work while hanging out with Lina.

NetGalley: I’m reading Dear Medusa when I can. I feel for Alicia early in the book. This one is sad and scary and makes me angry. I wonder how long it will take to get challenged or banned. (I’ll be mad about that, for sure.) I’m still a fan of this cover! Perfect!

May I say, “Ditto?” I’m still reading some excellent titles I started last week — I’m savoring the experiences.

Physical Books: This week I’m finishing Blended by Sharon Draper and playing with vocabulary using Absurd Words: A Kids’ Fun and Hilarious Vocabulary Builder for Future Word Nerds by Tara Lazar.

Libro.fm: I’m finishing African Icons: Ten People Who Shaped History by Tracey Baptiste. My students, colleagues, and I were laughing out loud (LOL) when we read the chapter about Amanirenas (no spoilers!).

NetGalley: I’m still reading Sofia Acosta Makes a Scene by Emma Otheguy. This is such a great book! I’m sure I’ll need a few copies for the library. The main character is already my favorite of 2022.

Have a great week! It’s time to read!

IMWAYR: Summer Time!

It’s (finally) summer time! With all the rain we have had this week, I’ve been able to read while I’m not resting my eyes. There are some excellent books out there! Check them out.

On Libro.Fm: The Barren Grounds by David A Robertson

On NetGalley.com: The Ghoul of Windydown Vale by Jake Burt

Physical Books: Stamped for Kids adapted by Sonja Cherry-Paul and Blackout by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon

I’m about ready to break into a new stack of picture books, as well. More on those later…

IMWAYR: Happy New Year! Let’s Read!

Happy New Year, fellow readers! In an attempt to be more organized about my reading this year, I’m trying something new (we’ll see how long this lasts). Each week I’ll read physical books, listen to an audiobook, and read a NetGalley book, and then share my thoughts. This week I’m still working on 2020 titles while diving into my already-growing 2021 TBR list. NetGalley Reading: I finished Booked: The Graphic Novel by Kwame Alexander, with art by Dawud Anyabwile. This dynamic duo already wowed me with The Crossover: Graphic Novel Adaptation in 2019 and now they are back to retell the story of soccer player, Nick Hall. I LOVED the story all over again and I can’t wait for students to see this one on January 4, 2022 (yes, we have to wait another year). Physical Book of the Week: Before the Ever After by Jacqueline Woodson Libro.fm Audiobook: Rent a Boyfriend by Gloria Chao It’s MONDAY! What are YOU reading? IMWAYR: Listening to Words/Thinking About Craft

It’s the day before Election Day in the USA. Times are tense. Anxiety runs high. I’m focused on reading.

To keep my mind at ease, I think about the authors who craft their stories and question how they seem to get it all right so easily. I know that’s not true – there are many revisions, many edits, many days and months of struggle to get messages to readers. But still…it amazes me how simple it seems.

The first book I picked up after last Monday’s post was This Poem is a Nest by Irene Latham. I wonder how long it took her to craft all those little poems, the nestlings, she called them, from one longer poem, “Nest.” I love how she introduced the book, telling the reader how she painstakingly (must have been an awesome task!) weaved each word from the first poem into the 161 nestlings that became the rest of the book. She explained how she expanded the concept of blackout poetry and found poems to “find the whole world” inside “Nest.” I immediately began writing my own poems about nature, the moon, and responses to other poems. She inspired me! If you haven’t read This Poem is a Nest yet, add it to your list. You’re going to enjoy the creative process here.

I’m listening to some Libro.fm audiobooks this week. I want to experience the words in a different way. I’m used to reading, creating my own version of voices and pictures in my head. But with audiobooks, I get to hear those voices from narrators, many of whom are the authors of the books, which is interesting. Authors reading their own works allow me to hear their stories the way they want me to hear them.

This week, I will finish The Trial of the Chicago 7, but it’s a little deep for me right now. I started listening to Greenlights, which is Matthew McConaughey’s memoir – funny and light, but also thoughtful and introspective. Recommended by a friend, I’m glad I listened to her, too.

IMWAYR: Book Mail!

The book mail I received today is FIRE! Thank you Elly Swartz and Paula Chase for the wonderful gifts, which will go to students soon. I can’t wait to show them these awesome titles!

I will finish listening to Charming as a Verb tonight. It’s such a good book! (No spoilers here!) Then tomorrow on my commute I’ll start The Trial of the Chicago 7 on Libro.fm. Look at all those narrators — an all-star line-up! I’m looking forward to this one. (The movie is on Netflix, but I’ll wait for that until after the book.)
