IMWAYR: “Ditto” and a “Brand-New” Picture Book

I’m still reading the stack I gathered last week. The Aquanaut by Dan Santat is a fabulous graphic novel and every student is going to love it! I’ll need more copies in the fall, and I hear there’s more to come from the author. We Can: Portraits of Power by Tyler Gordon is stunning. The way the colors and lines bleed together to form a famous face…Wow! Get a copy of this title to keep!

NetGalley: There’s a brand-new book coming in August (Charlesbridge) called Brand-New Bubbe by Sarah Aronson and illustrated by Ariel Landy that’s wonderful! When a new addition to the family comes to visit, a young girl isn’t so sure about her. “I already HAVE Noni and Gram.” But Bubbe makes the best matzo ball soup. “But my other grandmas make soup, too.” Mom finally introduces a new concept to the child: Family isn’t only blood relatives. You can make up a family of all kinds of people, brought together by love. Preorder this one for Grandparents’ Day.

Sunday Snippet – A Bit Of Thinking

Maintaining the Motivation – 

     Last week students at my middle school were lucky to hear author Sarah Aronson talk about her writing process and share information about her upcoming picture book biography, Just Like Rube Goldberg. I went home that night with renewed interest in researching and reading…and writing. 

     Four days later, I struggled to sit my “butt in the chair” today and write anything of substance. Why is that? How can we maintain the motivation for reading and writing after a big literacy event?

IMWAYR: Re-reads and New Titles

What a week! I spent time re-reading some titles and digging into new ones.

We are Grateful/Otsaliheliga by Traci Sorell — This book is beautiful and I’m grateful to have it in my hands! I’m grateful for the ability to read and celebrate reading with my friends and family. I love learning about new places and people, and this hit the spot! Perfect for fall holiday season.

Booked by Kwame Alexander — This is still my favorite Kwame Alexander book, probably because of the cool librarian. My soccer students loved this one, too. Reading it aloud in class was the best!

Lu by Jason Reynolds — I just started this one (the fourth in the Track series). The cover is so inviting! “Sometimes you gotta jump anyway…” It’s the championships, but there’s a twist coming; I can see it now. Mr. Reynolds is famous for plot twists.

Just Like Rube Goldberg by Sarah Aronson (coming in 2019) — I’m lucky to be in the #booksojourn reading group, and Ms. Aronson allowed me to read this F & G (Folded and Gathered) book preview. She’s so sweet! Just look at the cover and be amazed! Rube Goldberg was quite the cartoonist and thinker. He “built” funky contraptions to complete everyday tasks. Do YOU know the only sanitary way to lick a postage stamp? Oh, Rube! How much fun is this? (LOTS of fun!)
